Why Having an Ahwatukee Home is So Desirable
Although technically one of the 15 urban villages of Phoenix, Ahwatukee is the most unique of them in that it is bordered by South Mountain Park to the north/west and Indian Reservation to the south. The I-10 highway is its border on the east. It is, in essence a large peninsula (35 square miles) with access only on the east. This in part gives Ahwatukee a small town feeling found in very few places across the Phoenix valley.
This is very rare in the Phoenix Real Estate Market where most cities/neighborhoods just blend from one to the next for what seems like forever. These natural borders create a small town atmosphere for Ahwatukee (80,000 people as of the 2010 census) and feels like a separate city within the sprawling Metro Phoenix Area.
Want to send your kids to the best schools in the state of AZ? Ahwatukee is home to two of the top school districts in the state. The Kyrene School District is where your K-8 children will go. The two public high schools (Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista) score much higher than most of all the Arizona school districts. These both fall under the Tempe Union High School District. Charter and private schools also exist in Ahwatukee.
Ahwatukee boasts three golf courses (Ahwatukee Country Club, Foothills Golf Club, and Foothills Club West).
South Mountain and the foothills... I love living in the Ahwatukee Foothills not only because the way that the subdivisions are intertwined with the South Mountain Foothills, but South Mountain Park itself. The park has 50+ miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding for all ability levels. Of course the mountain view homes for sale in Ahwatukee are simply gorgeous!
I spent most of my life in the flat Midwest so living in the Hidden Canyon Subdivision with a panoramic view of South Mountain Park has been a treat since 2003.
People, like myself, love to live in the Ahwatukee Foothills as there is just something about the way this Master Planned Community was carefully designed around the South Mountain Foothills. Many of the subdivisions, parks, and amenities are nestled between the foothills to create a more natural separation. And don't forget about all of the spectacular mountain views of South Mountain and the Estrella Mountains.
To add to the small-town charm, the Ahwatukee Farmers Market is held weekly at the Ahwatukee Community Swim and Tennis Center parking lot. Speaking of swimming and tennis, there are plenty of parks across Ahwatukee for swimming, tennis, volleyball, baseball, soccer, and even a skate park. As I drive clients around, they're always amazed on how many parks are scattered throughout Ahwatukee. South Mountain Park itself is the largest municipal park in the country with over fifty miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking with different levels to suit everybody. This is one of the crown jewels of Ahwatukee in terms of natural beauty and opportunities for entertainment/exercise.
There are numerous Ahwatukee amenities. Restaurants include Va Bene, Pita Jungle, Cafe Boa, Brazilian Bull Steakhouse, Star of India, Spinatos, Thai Basil, and countless more. Plenty of places for shopping in Ahwatukee like Target, Kohls, The RoomStore, Ross, just to name a few. Ahwatukee Spas include My Resort Tanning & Spa, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial, and more. Ahwatukee grocery stores include Safeway, Frys, Sprouts, Fresh-N-Easy, and Trader Joe's. Chandler Fashion Mall is just short 20 minute drive away. The Ahwatukee AMC Movie Theater is great place to watch a show.
The residents of Ahwatukee typically commute to Chandler for work (Intel and Microchip being dominate), Gilbert, Tempe, Phoenix, Mesa, or Scottsdale. Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport is about 20-30 minutes away depending on where you live in Ahwatukee.

Ahwatukee is a perfect place to raise a family, have a second home, or to retire permanently.
One thing that led me to live deep in the Ahwatukee Foothills was how the subdivisions and amenities are nestled in-between the many foothills. It just has so much character. I just love Ahwatukee!
